The mobile world is here, having arrived in 2014. It has been marked by the fact that there are now more Americans using mobile devices than desktops. Plus, the majority of consumers research products and services on their mobile devices before making a purchase, whether that purchase is ultimately in store or online.

A “mobile ready” website is now seen as a must-have, but the reality is that it’s not beneficial for every single website and business.

Mobile readiness is a part of responsive design and it has several possibilities. To be ready for mobile, you can have a mobile version of a website, an app, or both. Responsive design is a set of best practices to ensure that your website shows up quickly and attractively no matter what browser or device is being used (mobile or otherwise). While every single website should exhibit responsive design, that’s not true of mobile readiness.

Does your website need mobile readiness? Here’s your checklist to find out:

  1. You Know Most of Your Traffic Comes From Mobile Devices

Use analytics, big data or surveys to find this out. If the majority of your online visitors are using mobile devices, it’s at least worth looking into mobile readiness. However, just because “most Americans” are accessing websites in general from mobile devices doesn’t mean that applies to your demographic. Do your research and know where you stand.

  1. You Have a Lot of Complex Information on Your Website

Perhaps you’re in the business of web hosting and offer a lot of different packages — and have to explain complex tools to Luddites. If this is the case, it’s going to be maddening trying to navigate a regular, dense website on a smartphone screen. Having a lot of information, particular when it’s so rich, is a huge sign that a mobile website and/or app might be helpful.

  1. Your Website has a Lot of Videos and Images

Images and videos slow down a website, and they can also appear funky on different devices. While responsive design should be helping you stay in check, you might want to simplify things for your mobile users. You don’t really need that massive homepage image and barely complementary pop-up videos of lolzcats. A mobile version of your site can make navigation easier, page loads faster and a better user experience overall.

  1. You Have a Trending Awards Program

If you’ve drummed up an awards program that’s taking off, it’s often easier to get consumers on board with an app. Think of the Starbucks Rewards Program which requires you to text your email address in for a free drink, special offers and discounts. You can do the same thing with your business, and an app is the middleman that makes connecting easier.

  1. You Have a Lot of Special Events

Whether online or in a brick and mortar establishment, special events are a perfect match for an app. Encourage your customers to download it so they can keep up with what’s happening and score special deals. That way you can foster relationships while engaging your audience.

  1. You Have High Security on Your Website

For businesses like financial institutions where you’re required to enter information in order to access the site, that can be a real downer for your users. An app or even a mobile website can help speed things up while still ensuring protection is upheld.

Think you’re ready for mobile readiness? Assess your website now and figure out if you can do more to enhance the UX.
